Ice Service

The information provided by the Ice Charts is the product of the analysis and visual interpretation of high-resolution satellite images like SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images from the SENTINEL-1, SAOCOM 1A and 1B satellites and optical images from optical sensors on board different satellite platforms such as AQUA-MODIS, TERRA-MODIS, NOAA20-VIIRS and SUOMI- VIIRS.

The updating of the Ice Charts is carried out in accordance with the availability of satellite images on the internet portals that provide them so the information of the Charts is based on satellite images of different spatial resolutions and acquisition dates. The Ice Charts summarize the general conditions of sea ice and icebergs for the date indicated in the corresponding Chart, so the conditions described may vary depending on changes in the prevailing meteorological situation and due to sea currents.

The color coding and nomenclature used to prepare Ice Charts and record glaciological observations corresponds to the standards of the World Meteorological Organization, in accordance with the Ice Services of different countries. This information is available in the Sea Ice and Icebergs Observer's Manual.
